Peak leaf season is short, so a little planning goes a long way. Here’s how to make the most of it.

Time it right

Colours usually peak from late September to mid-October, starting up north and at higher elevations. Check local fall-colour reports the week before you go.

Pack the essentials

  • Layers: mornings are crisp, afternoons can be warm
  • A thermos of something hot
  • Snacks for the road and the trail
  • A fully charged phone (and an offline map)

Make it a full day

Pair a scenic drive with a short hike, a stop at a farm stand or orchard, and a cozy dinner on the way home. That’s a perfect fall day.
